A Mid-Week, Post-Op Update

Hello friends! Wanted to share a quick update on how my breast cancer surgery went on Monday. So many folks have been nice enough to call, text, email and comment through our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel that I thought I should take a moment and say hello.

Everything went well! Everyone at the UCLA Health Santa Monica Breast Center was warm and attentive. Word got back to Chris while I was still coming out of the anesthesia that the lumpectomy was a success. We got home Monday afternoon, and since then, I’ve been trying to take it easy and enjoying my delicious pain meds. Chris has taken the week off of work to look after me, which I so appreciate. Plus, I just enjoy hanging out with him all day. We’ve been re-watching “The Sopranos” lately, so that’s been a nice distraction (if not the most soothing programming we could have chosen).

My instinct in situations like this is to try and act as normal as possible — talking, joking, being engaged — in a way that reminds me of struggling to look sober when I was still drinking. Of course I can get out of bed and do a lap around the surgery center floor, why not? But resting has been nice, too. An old friend suggested that I lean into naps whenever I feel like it, and that’s probably what I’m going to do as soon as I push the button on this newsletter.

But! I did want to send out one more round of thanks for the amazing mom friends who’ve been taking care of me. They’ve stopped by with flowers and dinners and homemade treats, and I’m so grateful for all of them.

As for next steps, I have a follow-up appointment with my surgeon next week. I’ll also find out soon from my radiation oncologist about how much radiation I’ll need. But before then, I can finally take a shower today, woo hoo!
