Au Revoir From Montreal on This Saturday

But hello to Boston next week

In partnership with

Happy Samedi, all. We’re still in Montreal but getting ready to head out soon. We’ve had such an incredible week here and fallen in love with this city even deeper. So many days have consisted of wandering around the Plateau, grabbing a coffee or a non-alcoholic beer, meandering through the many parks, saying hi to cute dogs and taking tons of pictures. Old friends of ours met up with us on the front end and back end of this trip, and it was so much fun to catch up and show them around. I can’t wait to pick up Nic and hear all about his week at McGill.

Just gonna move into Parc La Fontaine and hang out with the ducks.

But I also squeezed in a little work during our downtime. Someday I’ll learn how to disconnect completely, but today is not that day. Here’s what we reviewed on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. Take us with you if you’re traveling, as well!

Joaquin Phoenix is the sheriff around these parts.

  • EDDINGTON. Ari Aster’s latest nightmare scenario seems designed to be divisive, and the intense remarks in the comment section of this review — many of which are insulting — prove his point exactly. This heavy-handed satire, set during the tumultuous summer of 2020, revisits how the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests polarized us as a nation. I don’t need to go back there for 2 ½ hours. Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler co-star. In theaters now.

  • SUPERMAN LIVE SPOILER CHAT. So nice to see so many of our folks, especially during a Friday in the middle of the summer. We got into all the cameos and revelations we didn’t want to ruin for you during our spoiler-free review of James Gunn’s new blockbuster. We love doing these spoiler livestreams, so keep an eye out for more of them in the future. And I promise we’ll do Friday movie news again once things settle down on both of our travel schedules.

Madcap hilarity ensues with these bumbling crooks.

  • NO DEPOSIT, NO RETURN. It’s time once again for our favorite game — Was It Great or Were You 8? — where we revisit movies we loved from our childhood to see if they still hold up today. This time, it was Alonso’s turn, and he picked this 1976 live-action Disney comedy. I’d never even heard of this movie, and wondered for a while what Alonso saw in it. Future Real Housewife of Beverly Hills Kim Richards co-stars with Brad Savage as a pair of precocious siblings who cross paths with petty criminals Don Knotts and Darren McGavin. Are you familiar with this film? I get to pick next time, and I’m so excited to share my choice.

Ugh, is “Squid Game” finally over?

Over at our Patreon, we wrapped up our recaps of “Squid Game” season 3. This six-episode season got increasingly difficult to watch as it went along. And yes, that’s the point: This is not meant to be a pleasant viewing experience. Maybe it’s me, or maybe it’s the times in which we’re living, but I found that I had less of a stomach for such cruelty this time around. These last two episodes in particular really strained to stretch the story out, and all the stuff with baby 222 felt especially insane. That ending suggests there might be more, though — “CSI: Squid Game: Los Angeles,” perhaps. But even with that jaw-dropping cameo, I’m tapping out. What did you think of this last season of “Squid Game”? Will you watch if there’s more? I’m curious to know.

Something you definitely should take part in, though, is Art House Theater Day, which is this Thursday, July 24. It’s a celebration of arthouses and independent cinema at theaters across North America, with cool programming that will (hopefully) inspire people to get out there and see movies the way they were intended. Several of the locations we’ve highlighted in our Movie House Shout-Out series are taking part, including The Frida in Santa Ana, CA; The Loft in Tuscon, AZ; and The Belcourt in Nashville, TN. You can follow them here on Instagram for updates. Grab a friend and go see a movie near you!

Gonna wrap it up here and grab some breakfast. Next stop: Boston for a few days before finally heading home at the end of the week. (Keep an eye out for our review of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which Nic and I are seeing at a press screening Monday night.) Thank you so much for coming along with me on vacation and sharing some of your time, especially if you’re out having summer adventures, too. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I hope you’ll pass it along to the movie lovers in your life — and if someone passed it along to you, I hope you’ll subscribe. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
