Good morning, my gorgeous Saturday people. I’m so happy to see you here again. And a big welcome to all the new subscribers who’ve found me since the Oscars. Things are a little quiet during these spring days now that awards season is done and summer movie season is about to begin, but I am here for you no matter what.
Alonso and I are both traveling now and in the near future, but here’s what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. Take us with you if you’re heading out on vacation, too. We’ll keep you company in those eternal TSA lines.

THEY WILL KILL YOU. No really, they will. This insane horror comedy finds the indomitable Zazie Beetz taking on an entire high-rise full of wealthy Satan worshippers who are … trying to kill her. If this sounds similar to last week’s “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” well, it kind of is, but it has a different energy and some truly gnarly special effects. Think of it as “John Wick,” by way of Looney Tunes. Patricia Arquette, Heather Graham, Myaha’la and Tom Felton co-star. In theaters.

FORBIDDEN FRUITS. Alonso and I didn’t agree on “They Will Kill You,” and we don’t agree on this one, either. On paper, though, it’s the kind of movie he usually loves. Lili Reinhart stars as the queen bee at a popular clothing store; Alexandra Shipp and Victoria Pedretti are her obedient fellow saleswomen. But a new employee (Lola Tung) threatens to undermine her dominance. There’s a delicious bitchiness to the writing in this debut feature from my fellow SMU alum Meredith Alloway. Think of it as “Mean Girls” in a Dallas mall. In theaters.
No Movie News LIVE! this week because Alonso is out of town, and then I’ll be out of town the next two Fridays. But come on back and join us on April 17 at Noon Pacific. We’ll have lots of catching up to do.
I also had the pleasure of discussing these movies and many others on both radio shows this week: FilmWeek on LAist with the hilarious Tim Cogshell, and Press Play on KCRW with the brilliant Angelica Jade Bastién. Give us a listen!

One of the movies we reviewed on FilmWeek was “The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist.” The documentary from Daniel Roher, the Oscar-winning director of “Navalny,” and co-director Charlie Tyrell gets its arms around a lot in addressing the hopes and fears we all have about artificial intelligence. Roher views this complicated topic through the lens of his impending fatherhood, repeatedly asking the question: Is now a good time to bring a child into the world? His approach makes an unwieldy subject feel personal, as does his lively use of animation. Roher talks to experts on both sides of this rapidly evolving technology, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. (Elon Musk agreed to an interview but canceled; Mark Zuckerberg never even responded to the request.) The film probably tries to encompass too much, actually: It touches too briefly on pressing matters like how AI is eliminating human jobs, or the danger of deepfakes and nudifying apps. Will AI destroy humanity or save it? While the film never answers that question, it should inspire a lot of conversations. “The AI Doc” is in theaters now.

Over at our Patreon, we’ve begun recapping season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again.” This Marvel series ended on an operatic note a year ago, with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Mayor Fisk asserting his dominance over New York City. Now, we see people joyfully submitting to a police state if it means lower crime rates, with vigilantes like Matt Murdock having to work in the shadows. There’s a rage to Charlie Cox’s performance this time around, particularly in the elaborate fight scenes. New episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again” air Tuesdays on Disney+, and we’ll post recaps the following Fridays. Watch along with us and share your thoughts!
And if you’ve been watching “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” with us, we’ll have a recap of the series finale on Tuesday. I thought this episode struck just the right tone, and was surprisingly tasteful for a Ryan Murphy production. But we’ll get into all of it next week.
That’ll do it for me today. Saturday morning means it’s time to head out to another track meet, this time down in San Juan Capistrano. But! Before I go, I wanted to put a couple of items on your calendar:
Today, there’s another round of No Kings rallies across the country. Nic and I attended the first two in Downtown LA, and they were joyous and inspiring. If you’ve thought about going but worry about whether it safe, I can assure you that it is based on my experience, at least. We saw every kind of person: families with kids, hilarious signs and upbeat music. If you feel the need to do something, you can find a rally near you here.
Our March Lunch Date meet-up for our Patreon friends at that level is on Monday at Noon Pacific. If that’s you, there’s a link to the Zoom meeting in your inbox. If you’d like to join these monthly live chats, you can find out more at the Membership tab. It’s a good group!
Thank you so much for spending some of your weekend with me. You probably get a lot of newsletters in your inbox, so I’m grateful that you’ve chosen to open and read mine. If you’ve enjoyed this, I hope you’ll pass it along to someone else who loves movies. And if someone passed it along to you, I hope you’ll subscribe. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
