Farewell to Moseby on This Saturday
Thankfully, there's a ton of new movies to keep me (and you) occupied

Happy Saturday, all. I’ve been thinking about this weekend for a long time, planning for all the big movies that are opening, driving up to LA nearly every day for screenings, and now it’s finally here. Weekends like this one, where there are so many films to choose from, are when I feel like I can help the most. Your time and money are valuable: I’m here to guide you as you choose how best to spend them.
So here’s what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. Hope you’ll give us a listen and share a few stars and thoughts — it helps folks find us in the ether. (And if you opened this email for an update on our sweet foster dog, Moseby, that’s at the end.)

Jared Leto, thinkin’ about being a real boy.
TRON: ARES. In the third movie in the “Tron” franchise, you don’t just go into the grid, the grid comes out to you. This movie has a dopey script but dazzling visuals and a propulsive soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails, so if you just want to go and treat it like a two-hour music video, that’s cool. Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters and Gillian Anderson star, with a brief little cameo from Jeff Bridges. In theaters.

They’ll never see me here.
ROOFMAN. Channing Tatum is charming as all get-out, as Alonso so aptly put it, in the true story of a kindhearted robber who secretly lived inside a Toys “R” Us store for six months. The premise feels like a brisk, high-concept comedy, but director and co-writer Derek Cianfrance (“Blue Valentine,” “The Place Beyond the Pines”) treats it like one of his grim indies. Co-starring Kirsten Dunst, LaKeith Stanfield and Peter Dinklage. In theaters.

JLo is radiant in “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. It’s kind of amazing to think that Jennifer Lopez hasn’t done a classic musical before, but here she is now in this film version of the Broadway production of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” It’s a totally different kind of dancing, and she has transformed herself for it. The film from “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon has all the Technicolor razzle-dazzle you’d want, but Tonatiuh is the real star. In theaters.

Rebecca Ferguson will save humanity.
A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE. The best film of the week and one of the best films of the year. ”The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty” director Kathryn Bigelow returns with an urgent, heart-pounding story about what happens when an unknown country launches a nuclear strike against the United States. This is essentially a sprawling, 1970s-style disaster movie with a huge ensemble cast, but it’s deeply researched, powerfully acted deadly serious. In theaters now before streaming on Netflix Oct. 24.

An impressive filmmaking debut.
URCHIN. Harris Dickinson (“Triangle of Sadness,” “Babygirl”) makes his feature writing and directing debut with this gritty, intimate story of an addict (Frank Dillane) living on the streets of London and struggling to get clean. It’s a clear-eyed but sympathetic portrayal, with a surprising comic throughline and some bold flights of fancy. An auspicious start for Dickinson, and he’s not even 30 years old. In theaters. (And if you’re in Southern California, I’ll be moderating a Q&A with Dickinson after the 4:45pm Sunday showing at the AMC Burbank 16.)
We discussed these movies and many, many others on FilmWeek on LAist with the great Larry Mantle. This was a beast of a list, but the always witty and insightful Tim Cogshell and I tackled it together. Give us a listen or take us on the go in podcast form.
MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This went longer than usual because we missed last week. Among the topics we discussed were “Marty Supreme” first screenings, why “The Smashing Machine” tanked, the Melania Trump documentary, the Riyadh Comedy Festival, and the $19.79 Smashing Pumpkins smoothie at Erewhon (which I’ll admit I want to try). No livestream next week because Alonso is traveling, but we’ll see you on another Friday soon.

Howard knows all — or at least he thinks he does.
Sometimes Alonso cheats on me with his husband, Dave White, on their Linoleum Knife podcast. This week, they interviewed Michael Cyril Creighton, the scene-stealer from “Only Murders in the Building,” who also happens to be a friend of theirs. They made this LKTV episode free to the public, so if you enjoy the show and his work in it, you should definitely give it a listen. Creighton is a delight and has lots of amusing stories to share. And make sure to check out our “Only Murders” recaps on our Breakfast All Day Patreon.
See you around, pal.
Finally, if you’re here for a Moseby update, I have some bittersweet news. Chris and I are driving him down to Huntington Beach on Sunday to bring him to his forever home. The folks at Boston Buddies found a lovely retired couple who are so excited to meet him and will have the time to devote to him that he deserves. We’ve loved fostering him for the past few weeks, and we’ll probably do it again, but this will be a better fit for him. Also, we got Moseby’s DNA results back, and they are WILD. He’s half French Bulldog, and then a mix of Chihuahua, Cocker Spaniel, Pomeranian and Maltese. So he’s actually not a Boston Terrier at all, but he’s 100% sweetness, and we will miss hanging out with him.
That’ll do it for me today. If you’re heading out to the movies on this crazy weekend, I’d love to know what you’re seeing. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I’d be honored if you’d pass it along to someone else. And if someone else passed it along to you, I’d be honored if you’d subscribe. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
