Happy Endless Saturday

You actually get three of them this weekend!

In partnership with

Happy Saturday of Memorial Day weekend! This is traditionally when summer movie season used to begin, but year after year it’s been creeping up earlier and earlier on the calendar. So at this point, you’ve already had a Marvel movie.

Time is a flat circle. But I am always here for you. Here’s what we talked about this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. And if you’re looking for our review of “Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning,” we did that last week. Hope you enjoy.

Everyone’s favorite chaos agent is back

  • LILO & STITCH. If you’ve seen “Lilo & Stitch” (2002), you’ve seen “Lilo & Stitch” (2025). This latest Disney live-action remake is extremely similar to its animated source material, complete with story beats and big chunks of dialogue. It does make a few inspired choices, though, including its casting. In theaters.

Male friendships are tough.

  • FRIENDSHIP. Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd star as neighbors who become really good friends, really quickly, until something really bad happens. We caught up with this A24 cringe comedy now that it’s in theaters nationwide this weekend, and we do not agree on how well it works. I laughed a lot; Alonso had some questions.

  • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! It’s been a few weeks, and I’m feeling pretty much back to normal these days, so we thought we’d do a movie news livestream. So much to catch up on, Including the Alex Garland “Elden Ring” movie and the Michael Bay “Skibidi Toilet” movie, which sound like Mad Libs but are, in fact, actual films in development. Plus a Cannes Film Festival update and trailers for Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing” and “The Bear” season 4. We’re hoping to be more consistent with these live chats on Fridays at Noon Pacific time, so keep an eye out.

Also on our news livestream, we remembered George Wendt, the “Cheers” star who died this week at age 76. The Chicago native had impeccable comic timing and a natural way with a one-liner. If you’re feeling nostalgic for your Gen X youth and have 18 minutes to spare, here’s a supercut of every zinger Norm delivered when he walked into that iconic bar. Rest in peace to a great.

Everyone’s gonna know that I’m totally high right now.

Over at our Patreon, we recapped the finale of “The Studio,” which we now know is the season 1 finale of “The Studio.” This episode ends in a way that seems pretty satisfying, with Seth Rogen’s studio head and his team barely functioning enough to present their slate at CinemaCon after a night of drug-fueled Vegas mayhem. This show was a lot of fun, both for its craft and its inside-baseball humor. I’m excited to see which celebrities sign up for season 2, and I imagine that Rogen’s phone has been buzzing incessantly with famous people clamoring to play asshole versions of themselves on Apple TV+. What did you think of “The Studio”? Let me know.

The Oscar-winning “Harlan County USA.”

Also this week at our Patreon, we reviewed “Harlan County USA” for May’s Off the Menu. Veteran documentarian Barbara Kopple won an Academy Award for this 1976 film about the coal miner uprising in rural Eastern Kentucky. Kopple really gets in there with her camera to make you feel how arduous this work is in cramped, dangerous conditions. But she also depicts this insular community with great dignity, and especially shines a light on the crucial role of women in standing up for workers’ rights. I’d never seen it, but Alonso had and loved it. “Harlan County USA” is streaming in a bunch of places, including HBO Max.

Oh hi, didn’t see you there.

This weekend, I’m psyched to dig into the latest book from my good friend Will Leitch. (If you’re reading this newsletter and enjoying it, you should also be reading Will’s newsletter and enjoying it.) “Lloyd McNeil’s Last Ride” is about an Atlanta cop who learns he has months to live, but his teenage son will receive significantly higher police benefits if he dies in the line of duty. So he keeps trying to get himself killed … and he keeps living. This is Will’s seventh book, and I don’t know how he does it with the 1,000 other jobs he has writing about sports, politics and pop culture. But he’s so insightful in such a breezy way, he makes it look effortless. You can order a copy here, or better yet, pick one up at your local bookseller.

A great beer for a great cause.

And while you’re ordering things online that I know you’ll like, grab some of the latest Athletic Brewing Co. limited-edition, non-alcoholic brew. Aftershift is crisp and light-bodied with notes of lime leaf and yuzu. It tastes like summer. And Athletic is donating $50,000 in sales of this specialty brew to the Southern Smoke Foundation, a non-profit that provides resources for restaurant and beverage workers, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. Athletic’s commitment to supporting charities and doing good work in the community is one of the many reasons I love being an ambassador for them. Plus! I can save you 20% with my link and code CHRISTYL20. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Gonna wrap it up here, but I wanted to mention a couple of things that are happening on Tuesday. At 11am Pacific, we’re doing a live spoiler chat about “Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning” at our YouTube channel. The link for that will be up soon. Come hang out with us and we’ll figure out together how Tom Cruise hung off the side of a plane for so long. Then at Noon Pacific, we’re doing our monthly Lunch Date for our Patreon members. These live meet-ups are always a lot of fun. Find out more about them here. Have a great, long weekend, thank you so much again for all of your support these past few months, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
