Happy Saturday of a 3-Day Weekend!

But for some reason, my kid has a 4-day weekend

Happy Presidents Day weekend! For many folks, it’s a chance to get away and maybe go skiing. For Nic and all the other kids around here, it’s actually a four-day weekend, because Friday was some sort of “local holiday,” whatever that means.

But for everyone, it means slim pickings yet again at the movies. Some of these came out in theaters Wednesday, while others are available through streaming. Let’s jump into this week’s videos at our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel:

Jennifer Lopez is in love with love, is that so wrong?

  • THIS IS ME … NOW: A LOVE STORY. Jennifer Lopez concocted this trippy cinematic odyssey to accompany her latest album, a follow-up to 2002’s “This Is Me … Then.” Basically, it’s a bunch of music videos strung together with a through-line about her lifelong search for love. Many will call it a vanity project, and they wouldn’t be wrong, but it’s visually inventive and a breezy 65 minutes. Streaming on Prime Video.

  • MADAME WEB. Yes, it’s at 13% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, but Sony’s latest fumbling stab at creating some sort of live-action Spider-verse isn’t as terrible as the clunky trailer or calendar placement in February would suggest. That mostly has to do with Dakota Johnson’s enjoyably blasé performance. (In case you’d like to read my RogerEbert.com review, here it is.) In theaters.

  • BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE. Bob Marley has to think about his whole life before he sings, and other music biopic clichés that “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” parodies so astutely. Kingsley Ben-Adir and the always ferocious Lashana Lynch are fine, but this is a frustratingly superficial movie about the reggae legend. You’ll have his songs stuck in your head for the next week, though. In theaters.

  • CROSSROADS (2002). Britney Spears’ one and only starring movie role is finally streaming for the first time on Netflix. “Crossroads” was much maligned when it came out over 20 years ago, but now it seems like a bittersweet time capsule, given everything the pop star has been though since then. Alonso and I revisit the road-trip drama from that perspective.

  • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! We love doing this, so we’re just going to keep on doing it every Friday at Noon Pacific time. Among this week’s topics are the cast for the latest “Fantastic Four” movie and whether we need a sequel to “Repo Man.” (We don’t.)

  • I also did my first vertical livestream. It’s a new thing YouTube has introduced, so I thought I’d give it a try with our channel members, and I’ll be sure to incorporate these from time to time. Exclusive livestreams are among the many perks we offer, so if you’re interested, you can explore through the Membership tab at the top of our homepage or by clicking Join at the top of any of our videos.

Hey, sorry I’m late, I didn’t want to come.

Speaking of Dakota Johnson, my brilliant friend Tim Grierson has a very fun article about her over at RogerEbert.com. He explores her general DGAF attitude, and why that makes her such a compelling figure. At a time when most celebrities are preoccupied with saying the right thing and avoiding offending people, Tim argues that Johnson’s cool, no-nonsense demeanor makes her unexpectedly refreshing.

You can call me Timmy Spice.

Also this week, Alonso and I had the thrill of seeing an early screening of “Dune: Part Two” on the Warner Bros. lot. We can’t say a whole lot before the review embargo lifts on Wednesday, but we were able to provide a brief social reaction on our YouTube channel. Basically, you should see it on the biggest screen you can with the best possible sound. It is breathtaking. More to come soon!

Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take ya.

And while it’s hard to believe the Oscars are almost upon us, the Criterion Channel has come up with a fun programming plan for peak awards season: a tribute to Razzie winners over the years. Some of the choices are obvious, like “Xanadu,” “Showgirls” and “Ishtar.” But I refuse to accept that “Cocktail” is on that list. And to be fair, many of these titles have become cult classics over time. Here’s a link to their lineup, and be on the lookout for our Off the Menu poll on our Patreon next month, which will feature many of these films. What’s your favorite so-bad-it’s-good movie? You can tell me. This is a safe space.

If you’d like all these goodies on the go this holiday weekend, they’re always available at our Breakfast All Day podcast, here on Apple or wherever you download your favorite shows. Hope you’re enjoying yourself wherever you’re going or whatever you’re doing. Thanks for sharing some of your time with me, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
