Happy Saturday From the Airport!

The second half of our vacation starts now

Hello! Just a quick catch-up as we’re on the move again. After a glorious week in Montreal, we’re about to spend the next week in Boston. We could have stayed forever, though — or at least until winter starts. This place is magical in the summertime. We love wandering the streets, exploring different neighborhoods like the Plateau and Mile-End, stopping here and there for a drink or a coffee. I didn’t get to do everything I love here because I’m still recovering from knee surgery. But we explored quite a bit, including a day trip by train to historic Quebec City, which we’ve wanted to visit for years. It’s extremely charming.

Love wandering through Montreal with Chris and Nic.

Also during this trip, Nic and I saw “Deadpool & Wolverine” the Thursday afternoon it opened. Every summer we visit Montreal, we always end up seeing whatever the big movie of the week is, and this is one of the biggest of the season if not THE biggest. We had lots of folks in Deadpool T-shirts at our screening. And it was amusing to see how certain jokes did or didn’t play here. A couple of bits about Canada — home of Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy — got big laughs, but then I was the only one laughing out loud at L.A.-specific lines.

The bromance of the summer is finally here.

Of course, I had to make time during vacation to review this movie and others. Here’s what we have for you this week at our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel. Hope you’ll subscribe if you haven’t already.

  • DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE. Alonso and I are both extremely mixed in our spoiler-free review of this third “Deadpool” movie. It starts out strong but gets bogged down in meta pop culture references, fourth-wall breaks, snarky Hollywood industry observations and copious comic book character cameos. The muchness will be a feature and not a bug for a lot of people. Details on a live spoiler chat coming soon. In theaters.

These guys are not nearly as good at their jobs as they think they are.

  • TIME BANDITS: WAS IT GREAT OR WERE YOU 8? It’s time for another round of our favorite game, where we go back and watch movies from our youth to see whether they still hold up, or we just love them because of nostalgia. I picked Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” from 1981, because Taika Waititi is doing his own version of it as an Apple TV+ series. This movie scared the crap out of me when I was a little girl. Watch and see what we think of it now! Available through streaming.

Time to come out of the freezer, Carmy.

Over at our Breakfast All Day Patreon, we finished our recaps of “The Bear” season 3. Individual episodes were extraordinary: namely the impressionistic premiere; episode 6, which Ayo Edebiri directed; and episode 8, a two-hander between Jamie Lee Curtis and Abby Elliott as Sugar is about to give birth. Others felt a bit like filler, and the finale left us on a frustrating cliffhanger. Still, we’ll always come back for another helping, and we can’t wait until season 4 begins in 2025. What did you think of “The Bear” season 3? Was it as good as the first two?

Also for our Patreon friends: Our next Lunch Date meet-up is at Noon Pacific time this Monday, July 29. These are the monthly live chats we do with our folks at the $10 level. We talk about movies, travel, whatever’s going on in our lives — it’s a good group. To find out more about what we offer, check out the Membership tab.

Ethan Hawke discusses “Wildcat” and much more on the Team Deakins podcast.

Finally, I had the pleasure of listening to the latest episode of the Team Deakins podcast, featuring Ethan Hawke, on the train ride up to Quebec City. I’ve been a huge fan of Roger Deakins’ work as a cinematographer for a long time, and the podcast he does with his wife and longtime collaborator, James, is a must for anyone interested in how movies get made. Hawke was a wonderful guest and delightful company for part of my three-hour journey. He discussed his decades-long career as an actor, writer and director, including making “Wildcat” with his daughter, Maya. It was so refreshing to hear the youthful enthusiasm and passion in his voice after all this time, and he articulates so beautifully what makes a project work. Give it a listen if you get a chance.

And as always, you can find our work in podcast form here on Apple and in all the podcast places. Hope you’ll subscribe and leave a review — it helps other folks find us in the ether!

Gonna wrap it up here, but thanks so much as always for spending some time with me, especially if you’re on the go these days, too. If you’ve found value in my newsletter, I’d be honored if you’d share it with a friend. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
