Happy Saturday From the Demon World

These insanely catchy songs will leave my head eventually ... right?

Good to see you, Saturday people. Despite my denial, summer is indeed winding down. I know this because Nic will be a sophomore in high school next week and I wore an actual jacket to dinner last night. This is all deeply perplexing.

What are you doing to postpone the inevitability of fall? Do movies figure into your plans? If so, I can help. Here’s what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast.

Sing along with Zoey, Rumi and Mira.

  • KPOP DEMON HUNTERS. It’s a bona fide pop culture phenomenon. We’d been meaning to get to this movie for a while, but realized it had reached critical mass when I heard “Golden” on the radio on the way to Costco. This animated musical came out on Netflix several weeks ago and has only gotten more popular since, but we’ve been traveling and juggling. Now I’m so glad we’ve had a chance to talk about the movie, because it’s a blast. And our timing ended up being good, because Netflix has announced sing-along showings in select theaters for one weekend only, Aug. 23-24. So actually, we’re early depending on your perspective. Find out here if it’s playing near you.

Making wholesome family memories with Bob Odenkirk.

  • NOBODY 2. Imagine John Wick in a remake of “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what this sequel has in store for you. The novelty of watching Bob Odenkirk kick ass as a laconic assassin has worn off a bit, but the fight sequences are fun. It has an eclectic supporting cast, including Connie Nielsen, John Ortiiz, Colin Hanks, RZA and Sharon Stone. And it’s blissfully short, clocking in at just under 90 minutes. In theaters.

Still terrifying.

  • WEAPONS LIVE SPOILER CHAT. We had a great turnout for our spoiler livestream this week, with our viewers offering all kinds of inspired theories about what’s really going on in “Weapons.” And they pointed out so many cool details that we missed as far as numbers and symbolism. This was a lot of fun, but only watch if you’ve seen the movie. Knowing nothing ahead of time is the best way to go. In theaters.

  • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Two weeks in a row! Feels like we’re getting back to normal after a busy summer. Among the topics we discussed were the trailer for the new Timothée Chalamet movie “Marty Supreme,” Taylor Swift’s new album, Park Chan-wook’s Writers Guild expulsion, Tom Cruise turning down a Kennedy Center honor and more. Plus, we remember Danielle Spencer, who played little sister Dee with expert comic timing on the ‘70s sitcom “What’s Happening!!” We’ll be back next Friday at Noon Pacific, so join us.

I also had the pleasure this week of appearing on KCRW Press Play With Madeleine Brand, where film critic Shawn Edwards and I disagreed, as we tend to do. Among the movies we discussed were “Highest 2 Lowest,” Spike Lee’s reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s “High and Low.” Alonso and I will review both of those films when “Highest 2 Lowest” comes out on Apple TV+ on Sept. 5, so keep an eye out for that.

Gonna miss Carrie Coon’s giant hats.

Over at our Patreon, we recapped the season 3 finale of “The Gilded Age” on HBO Max. So much happens, much of it at the two extravagant, end-of-season balls in Newport. Peggy gets engaged! Marian and Larry reconcile! And Mrs. Astor actually shows up, despite the scandal-plagued members of society in attendance. Everything seems to be wrapping up in satisfying fashion, but wait: We have a cliffhanger, as George hops in his carriage and abruptly leaves Bertha. This was the best season yet and we can’t wait for more. You can catch up with all of our recaps here.

Hey hey! This show is pretty great.

Also at our Patreon, we’re catching up with “Sirens” on Netflix, since we have a little gap between shows. This juicy, five-part series came out in May, but watching it at the end of summer feels apt, since it takes place over Labor Day weekend. Julianne Moore stars as a charismatic, cultish figure in a tony, Hamptons-like setting. Milly Alcock plays her perky, devoted assistant, and Meghann Fahy co-stars as Alcock’s worried, older sister, who insinuates herself into this pastel bubble to find out what’s really going on here. This is breezy escapism, with exquisite costume and production design. We recap the first two episodes here, and we’ll do 3-5 next week. Join us!

Gonna wrap it up here, but first, a quick reminder: We’re doing our monthly Lunch Date a little early this time because Alonso wants to take off the last week in August (and sure, I guess I can force myself not to work for a little while). Our next meet-up will be at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, Aug. 19. We love chatting with our folks about the latest movies and whatever else is going on in our lives. It’s a good group! Find out more about the perks we offer at various levels and join us at our Patreon membership page.

Thanks for being here and sharing some of your time with me. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I’d be honored if you’d pass it along. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
