Happy Saturday From Home, With My Leg Elevated

Skiing is dangerous!

Morning, friends. Back home again and recovering from a very stupid, fluky skiing accident at Mammoth last weekend. I won’t bore you with the gory details here (we discussed it on our latest Movie News LIVE! segment if you’d like to watch the video), but it happened while getting off a chair lift on the afternoon of the last day of our last trip of the season. It’s my first injury ever in 30-plus years of skiing.

Shout-out to the folks at Mammoth Hospital!

So here I am now, with a possibly torn MCL and ACL. I’ll find out the MRI results next week. Huge thanks to Max from ski patrol, everyone at Mammoth Hospital, and of course Chris and Nic for all their help and support. I love skiing, and running, and being active in general, so I can’t wait to get back out there.

But! Being injured does give me more time to watch movies. We reviewed a bunch this week at our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel, including:

Just hanging out, thinking about stuff.

  • THE FALL GUY. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have crazy chemistry in this big, glossy love letter to stuntmen from director David Leitch (“Atomic Blonde,” “Bullet Train”). It’s too long, as Leitch’s films tend to be, but it’s a hugely entertaining movie to kick off the summer. In theaters.

  • UNFROSTED. Jerry Seinfeld’s star-studded Pop-Tart origin story inspired one of our biggest disagreements ever. One of us laughed the whole way through; one of us thought this was one of the worst movies of the year. Both of us agree that Pop-Tarts are delicious. Streaming on Netflix.

They’ll never recognize us like this.

  • THE IDEA OF YOU. Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine have crazy chemistry in this romance between a 40-year-old divorced mom and the 24-year-old lead singer of a boy band. Can they make it work? Should they even try? We also have questions about the way they navigate LA traffic. Streaming on Prime Video.

  • Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN. This is a throwback review from July 2022 of the movie that put Alfonso Cuarón on the map, which we offered our channel members. These are the kinds of perks you get with channel membership, along with shout-outs, early access to spoiler reviews and special livestreams. Find out more here and join us!

These songs will get stuck in your head.

Also this week, we did a lengthy “Challengers” spoiler conversation at our channel. So much happens in Luca Guadagnino’s twisty tennis love triangle that we had to get into it with our folks. And as always, our viewers are so astute, they mentioned details and possibilities that hadn’t even occurred to us. And speaking of “Challengers,” if you haven’t listened to the score from Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, you are missing out. If you’ve seen the movie, you know the techno tunes add a party-like atmosphere but also a sense of danger. Plus it provides great driving and running music. Streamable and downloadable everywhere.

Watch it for the wallpaper alone.

Finally, we started watching “The Sympathizer” on Max for our Patreon. Several subscribers suggested it as our next show to recap, and I’m so glad we’re doing it. The great Korean director Park Chan-wook (“Decision to Leave,” “Oldboy,” “Stoker”) created the series, based on the Pultizer prize-winning book by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Hoa Xuande stars as a Viet Cong spy implanted in the South toward the end of the Vietnam War. Robert Downey Jr. and Sandra Oh are among the strong supporting cast. It’s smart, multilayered and has incredible production design, as fans of Park will appreciate. We did the first two episodes this week, we’ll do 3 and 4 next Friday, and then we’ll be caught up. Watch along with us!

We use our Lodge products daily around here.

One more quick thing: We’re really happy to be working with the folks at Lodge Cast Iron cookware. We use Lodge products pretty much every day in our house, from scrambling eggs to sautéing vegetables. Right now they have a huge sale on their USA Enamel line — those big, sturdy Dutch ovens that are great for making soup or chili. Take up to 20% off now through May 12 with our link. Hope you enjoy! Thank you guys so much for hanging out with me for a bit this weekend. Hope you have something fun planned — today is May the 4th after all, so maybe you have something “Star Wars”-related on the agenda. If you enjoyed this newsletter and found some value in it, I’d be honored if you’d share it with a friend. Take care, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
