Happy Saturday, Searching for Daylight

Spring forward like your life depends on it. Because it does.

Saturday people! So good to see you. Things are finally calming down a bit on this end now that the Oscars are over, and hopefully they are for you, as well. If you joined our Oscar night livestream or reactions chat the next day, thank you! If you did horribly in your Oscar pool because you listened to our predictions, I apologize! But if it’s any consolation to you, my ballot was a disaster, as well. I only got 16 out of 23 categories right, but it was so much fun being wrong.

And if “Anora” winning five Academy Awards including best picture got you thinking, “I should probably watch ‘Anora,’” you can do that from the comfort of your home very soon. Sean Baker’s rollicking dramedy will be streaming on Hulu starting March 17. I hope you love it as much as I did.

As for new movies, we kept it simple this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast.

You’re not seeing things. There really are two of us.

  • MICKEY 17. Why stop at one Robert Pattinson when you could have two? I wanted to love the latest from Bong Joon Ho, which comes six years after his Oscar-winning masterpiece, “Parasite.” But this sci-fi extravaganza is kind of a mess. I also had the pleasure of reviewing “Mickey 17” for RogerEbert.com, if you’d like to read my thoughts over there.

  • OSCAR REACTIONS LIVESTREAM. We had a great turnout for our morning-after livestream, where we discussed everything that happened on Oscar night. Were you happy with the way things turned out? Who did you think was best-dressed? Is Adrien Brody still talking?

  • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! More Oscar follow-ups here, as well as a look at the South by Southwest Film Festival, which begins this weekend in Austin with some big titles (“Another Simple Favor,” “The Accountant 2,” “Holland”). Ah, memories of drinking too much Shiner Bock and eating too much queso. Join us for our movie news livestream every Friday at Noon Pacific.

Madcap hilarity is about to ensue in “Picture This.”

Also for Ebert this week, I reviewed the rom-com “Picture This,” which is more effective as com than rom. “Bridgerton” season 2 star Simone Ashley is totally charismatic, though, as a single London photographer who receives a prediction ahead of her younger sister’s wedding: She’ll meet her soulmate over the next five dates. It hits a lot of genre tropes but it’s also unexpectedly laugh-out-loud funny. Ashley is a total star, and she has great chemistry with Luke Fetherston as her gay BFF. This is one of the better movies-to-fold-laundry-to movies. “Picture This” is streaming now on Prime Video.

The ass-kicking lawyer is back in “Daredevil: Born Again.”

Over at our Patreon, we’ve started recapping “Daredevil: Born Again,” the latest Marvel series on Disney+. It’s a continuation of the Netflix “Daredevil” series, but you don’t need to have seen that to watch this. (Although, with all Marvel properties, some knowledge of these characters and their histories is helpful.) The first episode in particular has a ton of style, and the tension between Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin holds great promise. The tone of the show is dark and substantial; Nic compared it to the Batman spin-off “The Penguin” on Max, and that’s a good observation. Episodes 1 and 2 are out there now; we’ll recap on Fridays all season long.

Talk show host John Mulaney: Who doesn’t want more of this?

If you loved John Mulaney’s “Everybody’s in LA” series last year, you’re in for a treat. He’s doing more of these shaggy, live talk shows starting Wednesday on Netflix. I wrote about this a bit when the series first aired. Mulaney put together this inspired and intentionally messy talk show during the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival last May. He invited fellow comedians to come on including Jerry Seinfeld, Nikki Glaser, Bill Hader and Sarah Silverman, and each of the six episodes focused on a different LA-centric topic like earthquakes or palm trees. It was so delightful and such a success that Netflix is bringing it back on a more formal basis. “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney” begins at 7pm Pacific time on March 12. A trailer came out this week which totally encapsulates the vibe of the show. I can’t wait.

Trailblazer: A good brew for a good cause.

One of the many things I love about being an ambassador for Athletic Brewing Co. is the good work they do in the community. Since March is Women’s History Month, they’ve brought back the Trailblazer, a non-alcoholic hoppy helles with notes of peach, citrus and florals. A portion of the malt for the brew came from the woman-owned Montana Craft Malt, and proceeds from Trailblazer will go to the empowerment group Girls on the Run International. I’m also loving the Irish Red lately: Pick some up in time for your St. Patrick’s Day festivities and be hangover-free the day after. Take 20% off your order with my link and code CHRISTYL20. These are both limited-time, specialty brews and they always sell out. I’d love to know what you try.

Thank you so much for sharing some of your time with me this weekend, especially when you have less time to share. Daylight Saving begins on Sunday, so don’t forget to set your clocks forward an hour. The tidy Virgo in me enjoys when I get the stove, microwave and coffee pot clocks synchronized just right. It’s the little things! If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I’d be honored if you’d share it with the movie lovers in your life. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
