Good morning, Saturday people. This will be a quick one today because I have to drive Nic up to El Monte for a track meet. El Monte! In a heatwave! Those poor kids. We have become soft beach folk.
It was a quiet week at our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast anyway, coming out of the Academy Awards. Thanks so much to everyone who hung out with us during our live Oscar Watch Party (and stayed with us after we sorted through some technical troubles). It was, of course, a huge night for “One Battle After Another” and for Paul Thomas Anderson, but I was delighted to see “Sinners” do so well, too. I don’t rank my top 10 at the end of the year anymore, but if I had to, I’d probably put “Sinners” at No. 1.
Did your favorite movie win? Did you dominate your pool? We recapped all of it the next morning during our Oscar reactions live chat. And that’s that! I hope we’ve been helpful throughout awards season. Let’s do it again next year (but enjoy a little downtime first).

The big, new movie in theaters is, of course, “Project Hail Mary,” which we reviewed last week as early as we possibly could. I can’t tell you how many people have asked me about this Ryan Gosling sci-fi comedy — people who have and have not read the Andy Weir book alike. It had a huge opening on Thursday night with $12 million, and is expected to make about $65 million over the weekend. A lot of that will come from pricey IMAX tickets, but if you can see it that way, you really should. “Project Hail Mary” is a glorious experience on a giant screen.

The other wide release of the weekend is “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” which is a terrible title. (Come on, guys. The 2 is implied.) Seven years after the original “Ready or Not,” billionaire satanists are still hunting Samara Weaving. What are the odds? Actually, the way they get back into this world is kind of clever. But now there are more characters over a larger space, which dilutes the suspenseful sense of claustrophobia inside the mansion of the first film. New additions to the cast include Kathryn Newton, Elijah Wood, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy and — briefly — David Cronenberg. In theaters now.
Why Burned-Out Professionals Are Turning to CBD
Long hours, heavy workloads and frustrating coworkers: job burnout is on the rise. Savvy professionals are turning to CBD and its sister compound, CBG, to manage work stress and burnout without losing focus.
Like CBD, CBG is a non-intoxicating compound found naturally in the hemp plant that is known for helping to manage mild/temporary anxiety. And these benefits are backed by science: participants in a 2022 CBDistillery study who took CBD + CBG reported:
Reduced mild or temporary anxiety and tension
Increased focus and mental clarity
That CBD + CBG was more effective than other treatments they tried in the past
When it comes to quality CBD products, CBDistillery is leading the way. Non-GMO, US-grown hemp, 100% clean ingredients, and a 60-day satisfaction guarantee give you one less thing to stress about.

Tonight’s the night! Alonso and I are so excited to show 1985’s “After Hours” at the Gardena Cinema. If you’ve never seen this hilarious and surreal Martin Scorsese comedy, or you’ve never seen it projected, this is a great opportunity. Griffin Dunne stars as a mild-mannered word processor who has the worst night of his life in lower Manhattan. We chose this movie to honor the tremendous Catherine O’Hara, but the whole supporting cast is great, including Rosanna Arquette, Linda Fiorentino, Teri Garr, Will Patton, and Cheech & Chong. “After Hours” seems like a quirky lark in retrospect, couched as it is between the grandeur and brutality of “Raging Bull” and “GoodFellas,” two films that are considered Scorsese’s masterpieces. But the verve and precision on display are very much his.
Doors open at 6pm, we’ll be hanging out in the lobby chatting with folks, and then the movie starts at 7. We love doing these live events and meeting our people out in the wild, so come join us. Tickets are available here. Support your local arthouse cinema!
Finally this week, our sweet foster dog Molly is officially up for adoption through Boston Buddies. I feel extremely conflicted about this. We’ve loved having her live with us for the past month, and it’s been so fun to see her playful personality shine through as she spends more time here. But I also know that our role is to serve as a bridge to her forever home. I love feeling like we’re helping, but I will also end up sobbing in front of strangers as I did when we dropped Moseby off with his new family last year. As she sleeps deeply (and snores loudly) in these pre-dawn hours, we’ll enjoy our time with her for as long as we can. If you’re in the market for a 10-year-old Boston terrier with cataracts who’s obsessed with tennis balls, I’ve got your girl.
That’ll do it for me for this week. Alonso and I are both in and out traveling over the next few weeks, so Movie News LIVE! will be a little spotty, but we’ll have other goodies in store for you. And of course, Saturday Matinee never takes a holiday, so you’ll be hearing from me again from Whistler very soon.
Thanks so much for starting your weekend with me. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I hope you’ll share it with someone else. And if someone has shared it with you, I hope you’ll consider subscribing. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
