Saturday people! Great to see you. Thanks for starting your weekend with me. Besides being yet another big, summer blockbuster weekend, it’s also Father’s Day on Sunday. More on that below.
But first, movies. Here’s what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. Take us with you as you’re sifting through the picked-over greeting card selection (ahem, Nic).

TOY STORY 5. It’s been 31 years since the first “Toy Story” movie, but “Toy Story 5” finds a way for the franchise to remain zippy and relevant. It won’t rip your heart out like the third movie did, but it is consistently funny — more so than the fourth one. If you’re a parent who has fought your child over screen time (again, ahem, Nic), you’ll relate to so much of the humor here. Alonso and I both liked this a lot. Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack, Greta Lee and an amazing Conan O’Brien are among the ensemble voice cast. In theaters. Like, ALL of the theaters.

THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD. If you heard about this movie and thought: “Hugh Jackman playing Robin Hood, that’ll be fun,” you are in for a surprise. Jackman does indeed play Robin Hood, but this is a brooding and brutally violent take on the legendary character. The film from writer-director Michael Sarnoski (“Pig,” “A Quiet Place: Day One”) is startlingly beautiful, though, and Jodie Comer is great as always. In theaters.

LEVITICUS. There’s been such a cool run of inspired indie horror movies lately, between “Hokum,” “Obsession” and “Backrooms.” Add this Australian title, which has a queer twist, to the list. Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen star as teenagers who fall in love, only to be forced into a conversion therapy that makes them fear each other. The leads have a ton of chemistry, and the debut from writer-director Adrian Chiarella has a rich sense of place. In theaters.

DISCLOSURE DAY SPOILER CHAT. There’s so much we didn’t want to ruin in our non-spoiler review of “Disclosure Day.” But now that Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi extravaganza has been in theaters for a little while, we thought it was time to go in-depth, especially on that ending. I also get super nitpicky about eveything the movie gets wrong about TV news. I’m fun like that. Watch and enjoy.
MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This was a lengthy one because there was so much to discuss, including the “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” trailer, Fox buying Roku, Amazon dropping Luca Guadagnino’s film about Sam Altman, the Wes Anderson Criterion Closet, and Ben Stiller’s New York Knicks documentary. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.
Adventure travel built for families
Intrepid Travel has just launched its new Premium Family range — eight new trips across Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, India, Borneo, Vietnam, Morocco, Thailand and Egypt. Small groups of three to five families. Intrepid's most experienced local guides. Immersive, kid-focused activities and elevated stays, with all the logistics handled for you. Watch baby orangutans learn to climb in Borneo. Stargaze at a desert camp in Morocco. Spot leopards on safari in India. These aren't holidays where you watch the world through a window — they're the kind of trips kids remember when they're grown up. Bookings for Intrepid's Family range grew 19% in 2025, and their new Premium tier is their fastest-growing travel style for good reason.

Over at our Patreon, we finished recapping “Spider-Noir,” the “Spider-Man” spin-off series starring Nicolas Cage as a hard-boiled, 1930s detective version of the beloved superhero. All eight episodes came out on Prime Video at the same time, but as always, we like to savor them. This show got better as it got Nic Cagier: as he leaned into his arachnid-like physicality, and his delivery became more volatile. We always loved the lush noir style — and I’m not sure about you, but we only watched it in black-and-white in our house, despite the option to switch to color. The middle of the series got a little mushy, but from the insane episode 6 on, it was a blast. If it ends with one season, I’m fine with that. “Spider-Noir” always felt like it could have been a single feature film that got stretched out to series length for streaming.
What did you think of the show? Let us know, and keep an eye out for our upcoming recaps of the final season of “The Bear,” plus the new “Legally Blonde” prequel series “Elle.” And of course, we’re continuing our discussions of “Cape Fear,” which got better with this latest episode. Join us for all this great television!
That’ll do it for me for today. Later this morning, Nic and I are doing a beach clean-up with the wonderful Surfrider Foundation. This is a job I’m uniquely suited for, since I’m low to the ground and detail-oriented. Any reason to spend time at the beach is a good one.
But before I go, I wanted to mention a deal I’m doing with Cameo for Father’s Day, similar to the one I did for Mother’s Day. I’m offering discount, personalized videos for just $20 through Sunday at 10pm Pacific. Anyone can give that special guy a tie. Let me help you with a last-minute gift for the movie lover in your life. Find out more and book your video here.
Thanks so much for spending some of your weekend with me. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I’d be honored if you passed it along to someone else. And if someone passed it along to you, I’d be honored if you’d subscribe. Saturday Matinee is always free. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
