Hello Saturday people! So fantastic to see you. The school year ended this week — can’t believe Nic is now halfway through high school — so that means summer really is here, even though we’ve had blockbusters in theaters for a while now.

But there’s an exciting variety of movies out there, as well as some movies I know people are super excited about that we … may have watched with less enthusiasm. We do it all for you! This is our noble sacrifice.

Here’s what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. Take as with you as you’re dashing out to pick up sunscreen and snacks for the beach.

  • SCARY MOVIE. It’s the sixth “Scary Movie” movie, but this time the Wayans brothers are back in charge. From “Sinners,” “Weapons” and “Smile” to “The Substance,” “Get Out” and “Longlegs,” they broadly parody every horror film you’ve seen over the past several years. It’s inherently a hit-or-miss proposition, but this mostly feels like misses. Still, Regina Hall is your MVP. In theaters.

  • MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. Your latest ‘80s nostalgia trip is inspired by the Mattel toys and Saturday morning cartoon series. Nicholas Galitzine IS He-Man, although he doesn’t quite know that at the film’s start. Travis Knight’s movie is cheeky and self-aware — stupid, but also not stupid enough. Idris Elba and Alison Brie co-star, with Jared Leto doing gleefully over-the-top work as Skeletor. In theaters.

  • OFFICE ROMANCE. Jennifer Lopez returns to rom-com territory as the CEO of an airline; Brett Goldstein (who also wrote the script with “Ted Lasso” co-creator Joe Kelly) plays a new lawyer at her company. Their attraction threatens the airline’s strict rule against inter-office affairs. What will happen??? This movie has an unexpected raunchy streak. I liked it a lot more than Alonso did. Streaming now on Netflix.

  • PRESSURE. We caught up with this historical drama that looks like it’s about D-Day. It’s actually about weather. Andrew Scott stars as a persnickety Scottish meteorologist called in to provide the forecast for the Allies’ attack on Normandy. A solid take-your-dad movie. Brendan Fraser, Chris Messina and Damian Lewis all chew the scenery in showy supporting roles. In theaters.

We also did a couple of livestreams this week:

  • BACKROOMS LIVE SPOILER CHAT. This was a really fun one because there are so many ways to interpret what’s really going on in Kane Parsons’ smash-hit horror movie. In case you missed it, here’s our spoiler-free review. I’d love to hear your thoughts once you’ve seen it.

  • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! A great turn-out and so much to discuss, including Bleak Week, “The Odyssey” ticket sales, Martin Scorsese’s embrace of AI, the passing of Marcia Lucas and much more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

If you’re a member of our Patreon, there’s still time to vote in our latest Off the Menu poll. June is Pride Month, so Alonso chose several recent queer films we didn’t get a chance to review previously for whatever reason. Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut “The Chronology of Water” is currently in the lead, but you still have a few days left to make your choice. And if you missed our May review of “Some Like It Hot” to honor Marilyn Monroe on what would have been her 100th birthday, that’s right here.

Also on our Patreon this week, we’ll begin recapping “Cape Fear,” a new miniseries on Apple TV. Patrick Wilson and Amy Adams co-star, with Javier Bardem in the infamous role of the intimidating Max Cady. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are executive producers. It looks great. And in preparation, we’re going back and reviewing both film versions of “Cape Fear” from 1962 and 1991. Join us for all of this good stuff.

That’ll do it for me for today. Chris and I are heading out this morning to continue training for the PV Loop, a 21-mile lap around the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This is a thing we’ve done before, and I look forward to getting back into the kind of shape to run it again.

Thank you so much for sharing some of your weekend with me. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I hope you’ll share it with someone else. And if someone shared it with you, I hope you’ll subscribe. Saturday Matinee is always free. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
