Good morning, my wonderful Saturday people. I hope you’re having a restful Easter weekend or a meaningful Passover.

We’re back at our favorite place on Earth, Whistler, BC, to do a little spring skiing before the season ends. This time, one of Nic’s best friends and his family are joining us, so we’re looking forward to showing them around. In that spirit, this week’s newsletter and next week’s will be a little shorter, but you know I’m always here for you, no matter where I am on the planet.

Here’s what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. Take us with you as you’re hunting for eggs.

  • THE DRAMA. So much buzz about this A24 romance, but it’s probably not at all what you’re expecting, given the playful marketing campaign. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson star as an engaged couple about a week away from their nuptials. One night after too much wine with their best friends (Mamoudou Athie and Alana Haim), they go around the table confessing the worst thing they’ve ever done. Zendaya’s character’s act is so shocking that it threatens to upend the wedding and all these relationships. Alonso and I have very complicated feelings about this movie, which we look forward to exploring during a LIVE spoiler chat on Tuesday, April 14 at Noon Pacific. Link for that coming next week. Join us and let’s work through it together.

  • THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE. It’s-a Chris Pratt, back for more animated antics as your favorite video game plumber, Mario. (No offense, Luigi.) “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” made $1.36 billion in 2023, so of course there had to be a sequel. Everyone’s back, along with some new characters. (Donald Glover IS Yoshi.) They all have to save another powerful princess, Rosalina, when Bowser Jr. kidnaps her. Am I actually bothering to explain the plot? Did we actually bother to review this movie? Yes, yes we did. Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Brie Larson and Benny Safdie co-star. In theaters.

I also had the pleasure of reviewing these movies and many others over at FilmWeek on LAist alongside the always insightful Beandrea July and Charles Solomon. We are also available in podcast form. Take us with you wherever you’re headed this weekend!

One of the new movies we reviewed on FilmWeek was the charming romantic comedy “Fantasy Life,” the feature filmmaking debut from writer, director and star Matthew Shear. He plays a sweetly shlubby law school dropout who ends up nannying for his therapist’s grandchildren. Along the way, he falls into an unexpected friendship and possibly more with the kids’ mother, a struggling New York actress played by Amanda Peet. Both leads are terrific, but “Fantasy Life” also has an incredible supporting cast. Each new scene features a character actor you love: Judd Hirsch! Andrea Martin! Alessandro Nivola! Bob Balaban! The film is really thoughtful about mental health and the way the world views women after 50, and there’s a meta quality to the casting of Peet in this meaty role. She’s never been better. “Fantasy Life” is in theaters now.

That’ll do it for me for this week. I gotta bundle up and get down to the gondola. But I’m so thankful that you’ve chosen to spend some time with me, especially if you’re traveling these days, as well. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I hope you’ll pass it along to someone else. And if someone else passed it along to you, I hope you’ll consider subscribing. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
