Happy Saturday! We finally made it. After months of thinking and talking and planning and prognosticating, the Academy Awards are finally here this weekend. Maybe you didn’t see a single nominated film, and that’s fine! Maybe you’ve got movie-themed snacks planned for the evening, and that sounds amazing (please send some over here).

Either way, Alonso and I are doing our annual Oscar Watch Party. Yes, you can watch the Oscars with us from the comfort of home (which is … also where we will be). We’ve done this a couple years now and it’s so fun. We’ll start at 330pm Pacific time Sunday at our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel, do a little red carpet coverage, then the show starts at 4. We’ll be there for the duration, and you’ll want to be, too. This is truly one of those years where anything could happen in several categories, including best picture. (I’ve got a little poll for you down below if you’d like to pick your favorite.)

Then, if you’re not sick of the Academy Awards (or us), we’re doing our Oscar Reactions Live Chat the next day. Whether or not you can make it on Sunday night, join us Monday morning at 9 Pacific to talk about everything that happened: The dresses! The speeches! The wacky Conan O’Brien sketches! We’ll get into all of it in the cold, hard light of day. Grab some coffee and let’s hang out a little longer.

In case you missed our Oscar Predictions Livestream with the always witty and insightful Glenn Whipp of the LA Times, here it is.

And if you’d looking for a downloadable, printable ballot so you can play along on Sunday night, we’ve got one for you.

OK! As for this past week, we took it easy at our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast because there’s so much going on this weekend. Take us with you as you’re getting your nails done and putting the final touches on your ensemble.

  • PROJECT HAIL MARY. Ryan Gosling goes into space … again! But this time he’s not sad. He’s actually hilarious as a middle school science teacher trying to save the sun from dying in this adaptation of the Andy Weir novel (which apparently a lot of people feel very strongly about). This movie doesn’t even open until March 20, but the studio is screening it early and often, a good sign that they know they have a hit on their hands. See it in IMAX if you can.

  • IT’S DOROTHY! The brilliant writer-director-editor Jeffrey McHale follows up his “Showgirls” documentary “You Don’t Nomi” with an exploration of “The Wizard of Oz” in general and Dorothy specifically. This is an intricately interwoven examination that will make you rethink everything you know about this pop culture icon. (Full disclosure: Jeff is a friend, but if we didn’t genuinely adore his film, we wouldn’t take the time to discuss it.) Streaming now on Peacock.

  • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! A lot to talk about heading into this big weekend, and not all of it was awards-related: a “KPop Demon Hunters” sequel, a Stewie spinoff from “Family Guy,” a long-awaited George Michael “Faith Tour” movie, and A24’s Las Vegas wedding chapel timed to “The Drama.” Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

Feel Better, Without Overthinking It

Last week, I mentioned that Alonso and I are showing 1985’s “After Hours” at the Gardena Cinema. Now, I have a ticket link for you. We’re so excited to share this weird-ass Martin Scorsese movie on the big screen and support one of our favorite local arthouse theaters in the process. Join us on Saturday, March 21. Doors open at 6pm Pacific, we’ll be hanging out to chat with folks who come early, then the movie starts at 7. We chose “After Hours” because it’s great, and because it features a great, unhinged Catherine O’Hara performance. We’re still missing her, and probably always will.

Finally, I’d love to know which film you hope will win best picture. I posed this question when the nominations came out in January, but I’m curious to see whether your feelings have changed over this seemingly endless awards season. I know mine have. I like being right, but I also like surprises, and this could go a couple different ways. Pick your favorite from among the 10 nominees below.

That’ll do it for me today. My kid has another early track meet, so we gotta get going. Thank you so much for sharing some of your time with me, this weekend and always. I am truly grateful for you. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I hope you’ll pass it along. And if someone passed it along to you, I hope you’ll subscribe. Have a great week, hope to see you Sunday night, and I’ll definitely see you back here next Saturday morning.
