Saturday people! Good to see you. Thanks for starting your weekend with me.

This also happens to be Mother’s Day weekend. So whether you are a mom, or you have a mom, or you no longer have a mom, or you have no interest in being a mom, I hope you do something special on Sunday. Maybe that involves brunch, or just going outside for a walk. (I can help you in the Mother’s Day gift department. More on that below).

And if staying indoors and going to a movie is part of the plan, I can help you with that, as well. Here’s what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day YouTube channel and podcast. Take us with you on your last-minute card-shopping trip.

  • THE SHEEP DETECTIVES. If you’re wondering why a movie about talking sheep is at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, well, that’s because it’s great. Hugh Jackman stars as a shepherd who’s murdered on his charming English farm. The sheep try to solve the crime, using clues from the mystery novels he read to them at bedtime. It’s hilarious but also surprisingly moving. The incredible cast includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Nicholas Braun, Emma Thompson, Molly Gordon and Hong Chau. In theaters.

  • BILLIE EILISH: HIT ME HARD AND SOFT - THE TOUR (LIVE IN 3-D). Billie Eilish teamed up with James Cameron to make this gorgeous, immersive concert film, shot over four nights in Manchester during her “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour. And they truly are co-directors: Besides the energetic performances, one of the great joys of this film comes from watching Eilish execute her vision. You’ll feel like you can reach out and touch the confetti. We had a blast. In theaters.

  • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! We’re back with lots to discuss: “The Boys,” “The Bear,” the Met Gala, the end of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s legal feud, and more. Plus, Atlanta native Alonso shares his thoughts on the death of Ted Turner. We’re not doing our news livestream next week, but come back on Friday, May 22 at Noon Pacific. We love seeing you and hearing your thoughts.

Over at our Patreon, we were delighted to recap “Gary,” the surprise episode of “The Bear” that came out this week on Hulu. Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal co-wrote and co-star in the episode, which takes place before the events of the series. It provides a fascinating glimpse into that friendship, and into the volatile nature of Bernthal’s character. Richie and Mikey must drive to Gary, Indiana, to run an errand for Uncle Jimmy. They get derailed many times along the way, and what begins as a joyful excursion turns darker the longer they’re away from Chicago. But there’s an unmistakable tension from the beginning — in the back-and-forth close-ups in the car, in the teasing banter with an annoyed edge to it. Everyone has mythologized Mikey so much since his death, so to see his dangerous and destructive side is gripping.

This was an incredible piece of writing and acting — a real high-wire act throughout. It also leads us into the fifth and final season of “The Bear,” which will come out on June 25. They like to dump a whole season of television on us at once, but we like to savor these episodes, so we’ll recap them two at a time. If you’re not already a subscriber, now is a great time to join us.

Also at our Patreon, we recapped the season 2 finale of “Daredevil: Born Again.” Any excuse to use a Radiohead song over a montage will do! As New York City stands on the brink of pandemonium, Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk have an explosive courtroom confrontation. Eventually, everyone’s story wraps up satisfyingly, with key characters outing their hidden personas. But the way Heather’s trauma ultimately reveals itself is chilling. We look forward to season 3, which is definitely happening, whenever that comes out on Disney+. Watch along with us.

That’ll do it for me this weekend, but a couple quick things before I go.

If you’re looking for a last-minute gift for the mom in your life, I am here for you. Cameo is running a special, with videos for just $20 for Mother’s Day. This is a great idea if she’s a movie fan — my own mom was hugely influential on my love of film from a young age — but you’re welcome to tailor the request to suit your needs. I’m flexible! The sale runs from now until 10pm Pacific on Sunday. Click here to find out more.

Also, the fine folks at CAROL Bike are doing a sale for the month of May: From now until May 11 for Mother’s Day, and again from May 20-27 for Memorial Day, take $200 off your purchase. I’ve loved having a CAROL Bike in the house for the past few years. It’s a great way to get an efficient workout in if I’m tight on time or if it’s raining and I don’t want to go for a run, and it was essential when I was rehabbing from my ACL surgery. Plus, it’s just fun. Find out more here.

Thank you so much for sharing some of your time with me. If you’ve enjoyed my newsletter, I hope you’ll share it with someone else. And if someone shared it with you, I hope you’ll consider subscribing. Saturday Matinee is always free. Have a great week, and I’ll see you back here next Saturday.
